Drug Use Review Program
Drug Use Review Program
Every enrollee in the Lucas County Prescription Drug Plan is eligible to participate in the Prescription Drug Use Review Program, sponsored by the Board of Lucas County Commissioners. There is no cost to participate. If you take multiple prescriptions, have more than on physician prescribing medication, or combine prescriptions with multiple over the counter medications or vitamins, you may be at risk. The Drug Use Review Program is designed to protect you from unintended negative drug interactions. A Prescription Drug Use Review is a private and confidential session(s) with a participating pharmacist. For more information, please contact one of the participating pharmacies listed below:

Expanded Drug Use Review Program:

The Lucas County Health Care Cost Containment Board (LCHCCCB) has recommended an expanded prescription drug use review program for county employees, their eligible spouses and dependent children through The Pharmacy Counter. The program duration is twelve months beginning with the date of the initial session. There is no cost to participate.

Who Should Participate?
  • Patients taking two or more maintenance medications;
  • Anyone who is taking medication and is experiencing side effects or is just not feeling well.

Incentive to Enroll:
  • A 90-day supply of Tier 1 and Tier 2 prescription medications at the same co-payment cost as the mail order program.
  • Tier III medications are not available with a 90-day supply.
  • Fee prescription delivery to your home (from some of the participating pharmacies). .
  • Each enrollee who completes the program will receive $50 worth of coupons toward their prescription drug co-payments at participating pharmacies.
  • Enrollees who complete the program will have their annual out-of-pocket maximum for Tier II brand name medications limited to $350 and $500 for Tier III non-preferred brand name medications (except Enbrel).
  • For patients with diabetes, 100 free test strips and lancets are provided each month and your blood sugar readings are reviewed and recorded.
  • Completion of this program may help you feel better and lower your out-of-pocket expenses.
Many times the medications that are prescribed are compromised by not being taking correctly or by other medications including over the counter medications. Hundreds of thousands of unintended reactions occur nationally each year, resulting in thousands of people being hospitalized and/or impaired patient outcomes.

Patients currently using the mail order program may benefit from routine access to a pharmacist and other medical professionals this program provides. While enrolled in this program, the use of the mail order program is suspended.

A leading cause of unintended negative reactions is lack of patient education regarding their medications. The Prescription Drug Use Review Program is designed as a series of private consultations with a pharmacist to review and record medications taken, eliminate some of the factors contributing to unintended negative reactions and help achieve an improved patient outcome.

Of course, no pharmacist can alter or override a prescription. Only your physician can change your medication. This process is not intended to substitute for the professional judgment of the prescribing physician or any other health care professional providing services to you.

Some County elected officials whose employees are enrolled in the Lucas County Drug Plan have agreed to allow up to an hour of work release time for the initial session. Employees who use work release time for the initial session must show documentation of attendance from The Pharmacy Counter. Please check with your employer.
