Lucas County Commissioners Award Ballpark Construction Bids

Lucas County Commissioners have awarded phase one construction bids for the
new downtown Toledo Mud Hens ballpark. The bids total $7.4 million, on target with
initial budget estimates for this phase of construction.
Lathrop Construction, ballpark construction manager, reviewed 15 separate bids
for the stadium's steel structure, concrete work, and site preparation. Lathrop made
recommendations on the best and lowest bids as follows:

.

* Steel Structure
|
Marysville Steel, Marysville, OH
|
$2,522,000
|
|
* Concrete
|
Rudolph-Libbe, Walbridge, OH
|
$3,025,000
|
|
* Site Preparation
|

Site preparation, including excavation, will begin within the next couple of weeks.
Construction of the ballpark's steel skeleton will begin sometime in March. Baseball fans
will start to see that skeleton take shape in the downtown Toledo skyline by late spring or
early summer.
"Awarding the first phase of ballpark bids is very appropriate during the holiday
season. A new Mud Hens stadium could be considered a community-wide gift that
preserves the heritage of the historic Warehouse District and assures an attractive
downtown Toledo for years to come," said Lucas County Board of Commissioners
President Sandy Isenberg.
"We remain committed to the community to construct a first-class ballpark that
will present attractive recreational opportunities and continue to spur economic
development in downtown Toledo," said Commissioner Harry Barlos.
"We pledge to keep a watchful eye on the project to ensure it is done on time and
on budget," said Commissioner Bill Copeland. "This first phase of bids are a good sign
that will happen."
The new Mud Hens ballpark will seat an estimated 10,000 fans and cost about
$37 million to build. The new ballpark is scheduled to open in April 2002.
