Lucas County Commissioners Announce Plans To Sell Seven Ballpark Buildings
|
Lucas County Commissioners announced plans to sell seven historic
county-owned buildings surrounding the site of the Lucas County Ballpark currently
under construction. Zyndorf-Serchuk will assist commissioners and the Lucas County
Economic Development Department in marketing the buildings to interested developers
and businesses.
The properties for sale include five buildings on St. Clair Street originally
purchased by the commissioners in the 1980's, and two buildings at the corner of Monroe
and Huron Streets, bought by the commissioners last year to make room for the Lucas
County Ballpark.
"We intend to sell the buildings to interested parties who want to enhance the
ballpark and surrounding Warehouse District in appearance and design," said Sandy
Isenberg, President of the Lucas County Board of Commissioners. "The most important
factor in any sale will be the proposed use for the building, which must take into account
the historic integrity of the building and fit into the overall scope of the area."
There is no formal asking price for any of the seven buildings, but the selling
price will be considered in any potential deal. The buildings will also be sold "as is". The
buildings were originally constructed between 1867 and 1887. Their size ranges from
2,800 to 10,800 square feet.
"We have promised the citizens of Lucas County a first-class entertainment
destination that will enhance the Warehouse District and help the renaissance of
downtown Toledo," said Lucas County Commissioner Harry Barlos. "That said, we will
base the sale of these buildings on what will happen to each of them in the long-term and
insure whatever interested party comes to the table has a proven track record of success."
Excavation, steel, and concrete work are simultaneously going on at the ballpark
site. The steel skeleton of the ballpark will start to take shape in the downtown Toledo
skyline in the next couple of weeks. The Lucas County Ballpark is scheduled to open in
April, 2002, in time for the Mud Hens home opener next baseball season.
"It is ironic that the Toledo Mud Hens begin their new season today in
Indianapolis," said Lucas County Commissioner Bill Copeland. "That means we are
exactly one year away from opening day at the new Lucas County Ballpark."
Lucas County Treasurer Ray Kest presented Lucas County Commissioners and
Toledo Mud Hens General Manager Joe Napoli with a $6 million mock check, reiterating
his plans to purchase that same amount of bonds to help fund ballpark construction.
