Q. What are the hours of the County Treasurer’s Office?
A. Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM-5:00 PM.
Q. How can I get a stamped "paid" receipt for my taxes besides my cancelled check for my records?
A. Your cancelled check serves as your receipt unless you mail in a self addressed, stamped envelope and the receipt portion of the bill. During the tax collection you may also pay at several area banks and get your receipt stamped.
Q. What is the Homestead Exemption, and how do I know if I qualify?
A. Click this link for the
full information about homestead http://co.lucas.oh.us/auditor/HomeStead/ExemptionProgram.asp
Q. Can I use my credit card to pay my real estate taxes, and where can I pay them?
A. Yes,
but we no longer accept them in our office. You can pay them online at www.officialpayments.com
or by calling 1-800-2PAY-TAX (800-272-9829).
Q. I didn't receive a tax bill. What should I do?
A. Failure to receive a bill does not relieve the taxpayer of their obligation to pay their taxes in full and on time. It is the taxpayer’s responsibility to contact the Treasurer’s office for a bill and to notify us, in writing, of any change of billing address. This may be done by mail, e-mail or fax
Q. What are the "Total Specials" that appear on my tax bill?
A. These are city or municipal assessments that are placed on the bill for services such as mosquito spraying, lights, leaf and snow removal, etc. For a breakdown, you can phone our office at 419-213-4305.
Q. I believe that the value of my property is too high. How can I have this re-evaluated?
A. The County Auditor does all the property appraisals for Lucas County. You can contact the appraisal department at (419) 213-4433 between the hours of 8:00 a.m.- 5:00 p.m.
Q. Why are my taxes higher than my neighbors?
A. Taxes are calculated on the appraised value of the property so unless the property is exactly the same the taxes will be different.
Q. Why does the tax bill read 2nd ½ 2004?
A. In Lucas County, real estate taxes are collected six months behind. The 2nd ½ 2004 tax bill is for the period December 20th, 2004 though June 20th, 2005.
Q. I didn't own the property last year, why should I pay these taxes?
A. Real Estate taxes are charged against the property, not the owner. At the time of billing we bill the owner of record. The Lucas County Treasurer's office does not pro-rate taxes. At the time of closing, the title company should have pro-rated the taxes for you.
Q. I received a tax bill and my mortgage company or bank should be paying this bill. Why am I getting the bill, and what should I do with it?
A. You should contact your mortgage company or bank and make arrangements to forward the bill to them so that they can pay it.
