Formal Biography

Lucas County Commissioner Pete Gerken took office in January, 2005 after the voters of Lucas County elected him to a four-year term.

Pete Gerken began his career in public service in 1996, when he was appointed to an At-Large seat on Toledo City Council. As an eight-year member of council, then Councilman Gerken chaired the Environment, Utilities and Public Service Committee and was strongly involved in both “Toledo Backs Jeep” campaigns.

Currently, Commissioner Gerken serves on the Executive Committee of the Lucas County Improvement Corporation and has taken the lead on the development of a multi-purpose Arena in Downtown Toledo. He was instrumental in the creation of a Commissioner’s Citizens Tax Levy Review Committee. He also serves on the Governor’s Workforce Policy Advisory Board.

Pete Gerken was born in Toledo and grew up in the historic Old West End neighborhood. He attended Central Catholic High School, graduating in 1969. In 1991, he received a BS in Organizational Behavior from the University of Toledo. For 30 years, he worked for Jeep / DaimlerChrysler as a member of the United Auto Workers (UAW). In December, 2004, he retired as Co-Administrator of the UAW DaimlerChrysler Ohio Training Center.
