HEALTH UPDATE: E. coli 0157:H7 Outbreak (Bagged Spinach) LOCAL PERSPECTIVES AND CONCERNS Press conference: Sept. 15, 2006 @ 3:00 p.m. Toledo-Lucas County Health Dept. Board Room
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued an alert to the public concerning an outbreak of E.coli 0157:H7 in several states that may be associated with the consumption of produce. Currently, bagged fresh spinach could be the possible source of this outbreak according to preliminary epidemiological research. At this time, FDA advises that consumers not eat bagged fresh spinach until further notice. Any person who believes they may have experienced any signs or symptoms of illness are advised to contact their health care provider. E.coli 0157:H7 is an infection characterized by bloody diarrhea and abdominal cramps. Illness may be complicated by a form of kidney failure called Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS). High risk groups for HUS include young children and the elderly. E.coli 0157:H7 can result in serious kidney damage and even death. Currently, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have 50 reported cases of illness including 8 cases of HUS and one death.

The investigation is ongoing and states that have reported illnesses include: Connecticut, Idaho, Indiana, Michigan, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah and Wisconsin. The FDA and the Toledo-Lucas County Health Department will provide any further updates as information becomes available. Dr. Grossman will be able to answer questions and explain local activity related to this occurrence.
