Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathies (TSEs) are a family of diseases that are believed to be caused by aberrant proteins called a prion. TSEs are characterized by spongy degeneration of the brain with severe and fatal neurological signs and symptoms. TSEs include: scrapie in sheep and goats, bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE, or “mad cow disease”) in cattle, chronic wasting disease (CWD) in deer and elk, and Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) in humans. You can learn more about TSEs by visiting the New England Journal of Medicine’s website.
