Did you know residents of Lucas County currently recycle over 98,000 tons of material each year? That’s about 433 pounds per person, per year or a little over a pound per person, per day. Combined with over 200,000 tons of industrial and manufacturing recycling, more than 300,000 tons of recyclables are saved from landfill disposal each year in Lucas County.

Each year, through a variety of District and private enterprise collection and drop-off programs, residents of Lucas County recycle over:

  • 150 tons of household hazardous waste
  • 34,000 tons of yard waste
  • 1,000 tons of scrap tires
  • 1,853 tons of glass
  • 23,461 tons of metal
  • 12,092 tons of cardboard
  • 24,123 tons of news & other papers
  • 812 tons of plastic

2 Billion scrap tires are stockpiled in the U.S.*

Americans generate 233 million scrap tires each year. 83% go to landfills, 9% are burned as fuel, 4% are exported and 4% are recycled into other products.*

Everyday, Americans throw away over 42 million newspapers.
Newspaper can be recycled 5 or six times.**

Americans receive almost 2 million tons of junk mail every year – 44% of which is never opened.**

More than 1 million tons of aluminum containers and packaging are thrown away each year.**

Recycling one aluminum can saves enough energy to keep a 100-watt lightbulb burning for almost 4 hours or run a television for three hours.**

Our nation generates more than 19.3 million tons of plastic waste each year, and yet only 2 percent is recovered by recycling.**

Glass makes up about 6%, by weight, of the nation’s solid waste stream. **

The average glass bottle weighs 8 ounces. The average American generates 94 pounds of glass per year.**
